A team of experts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), led by Lauren Leve, an associate professor of religious studies, and Jim Mahaney, a research scientist in the computer science department, is spearheading a monumental project. The team has embarked on a groundbreaking mission to digitally preserve the ancient Swayambhu Temple, a 1,500-year-old Buddhist shrine located in Nepal, which is one of the most revered religious sites in the country and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Mission: Digitally Preserving a Cultural Heritage Site

The primary objective of the project is to create a highly accurate 3D model of the entire Swayambhu Swayambhu Temple complex using cutting-edge technology, including 3D laser scanning, photogrammetry, and drone photography. By digitizing the temple, the team aims to preserve its intricate architecture and religious significance for future generations. This project also gives UNC-Chapel Hill students a unique educational experience by allowing them to explore the temple virtually through virtual reality (VR). Through this immersive technology, students can engage with Nepal’s cultural heritage without needing to visit the site. To further this initiative, the team has partnered with local heritage preservation organizations, such as Baakhan Nyane waa, and the Kathmandu Engineering College, where they are actively training Nepalese students in photogrammetry and laser scanning techniques. These interruptions have necessitated additional post-processing work to clean up the 3D scans and remove unwanted elements, such as monkeys that may have inadvertently appeared in the imagery.

Despite these difficulties, the team remains steadfast in their mission, and they are leveraging sophisticated software tools to refine their digital models. This meticulous work ensures that the final 3D representation of the temple is as accurate as possible. Lenovo and Nvidia’s support has been crucial in providing the necessary hardware and software to power this state-of-the-art digital preservation project.

Future Expansion of the Swayambhu Temple Model

Looking ahead, the UNC team has ambitious plans to expand their 3D model of the Swayambhu Temple complex. While the current focus is on the main structures of the temple, future iterations of the project will include adjacent buildings and smaller shrines surrounding the temple. To achieve this, the team has scheduled additional trips to Nepal, with the next visit planned for May 2024. During this trip, they will continue scanning and documenting the temple’s surrounding areas to create a comprehensive digital archive of the site.

This expansion will further enhance the educational experience for both UNC students and those studying in Nepal, as the virtual model will allow for in-depth exploration of not just the temple, but the entire religious and cultural landscape. Additionally, the project’s success has sparked interest in applying similar digital preservation techniques to other heritage sites across Nepal, potentially leading to the creation of a vast digital archive of the country’s cultural landmarks.
